Kansas City is a bi-state metro, and where a senior lives determines which rules, Medicaid program, and regulators apply. On the Missouri side (Jackson, Clay, and Cass counties), long-term care is administered through MO HealthNet MLTC and facilities are licensed by the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services (DHSS) under RSMo Chapter 198. On the Kansas side (Johnson and Wyandotte counties), the program is KanCare and facilities are licensed by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) under K.A.R. 26-39.

That state line matters more than families expect. Two communities ten minutes apart can sit under different licensing bodies, different Medicaid waivers, and different pricing norms — Kansas-side communities often run slightly lower than the Missouri side for comparable care. Our advisors know both systems and can compare options across the line so you're not limited to one half of the metro.

Common questions

Which Kansas City metro cities do you cover?
We cover all 15 cities in the bi-state metro: Kansas City MO, Kansas City KS, Overland Park, Olathe, Leawood, Lenexa, Shawnee, Prairie Village, Mission, Lee's Summit, Independence, Blue Springs, Raytown, Gladstone, and Liberty — spanning Jackson, Clay, Cass, Johnson, and Wyandotte counties.
Does it matter which side of the state line a city is on?
Yes. Missouri-side cities use MO HealthNet MLTC Medicaid and are licensed by Missouri DHSS (RSMo Ch. 198); Kansas-side cities use KanCare and are licensed by Kansas KDADS (K.A.R. 26-39). Medicaid follows the resident's state of residence, so a cross-line move can change which program applies. Kansas-side pricing also tends to run slightly lower.
Can you compare options in more than one city at once?
Absolutely. Many metro families weigh communities in two or three neighboring cities. A free KC Senior Advisor advisor can pull verified options across both states and narrow them to the best two or three matches for your parent's needs and budget.
